Mulled Wine

  • bottle of red wine (easy drinking style)
  • 2 citrus fruits (orange and/or lemon, chop coarsely)
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • sugar to your liking (e.g. 4 tbsp.)

For the gourmet version add some or all of the following:
  • 1 cup of port wine
  • dash of cognac
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 cloves
  • pinch of cardamom
  • pinch of nutmeg

Method: Put all ingredients into a pot, and heat gently with a lid on top. Don't boil! Sweeten to your liking (brown sugar and/or honey), water it down with fruit juice or water if it is to strong. Strain before you serve.

You can substitute the stick of cinnamon with powdered cinnamon. But be careful with the amount, a little goes a long way (add the powder just before serving).

Hmm, wonderful, a mug of 'gluhwein' goes so well with a lovely piece of gingerbread or a crunchy biscotti. A real winter warmer.
